Grass brown

Question
Hello- I live in Maryland and in the spring I was very "gung ho" about watering my grass and fertilizing when suppose to. However, we received a great deal of rain in late June. That is when I stopped watering my grass. Not a good idea. It has not rain much at all since June and I have not watered. The out come, brown grass, is it dead? can I water to bring it back? Is it dorment? Please help? Thanks Much
Sara

Answer
Hi Sara - Can you give me an idea of what kind of grass we are talking about?  I have a feeling you would have mentioned that if you knew the answer - but do the words Bluegrass or Bermudagrass or Ryegrass or Fescue sound familiar?

It is understandable that you would stop watering if large quantities of H20 were falling from the sky daily.  That was a very good idea.  Do you know how many questions I received about fungus in the late spring from people whose automatic sprinklers watered on scheduled during several weeks of rain?

Some cool season grass grows thoroughly dormant when the temps heat up and the rain stops.  They sort of languish through the summer and then begin to perk up as the temps become more civilized.  Then in September - a week from now - with the cool nights, they perk up and begin to flourish again.  How does it look right now?

Maryland is one of those states in the "transition zone" - cool season grass is popular in some areas, warm season grass thrives in others, and some people just grow zoysia wherever.

Fear not, Sara.  If your grass is badly damaged, beyond the point of no return, this is the best time of year to fix that problem.  How did it look today?

rsvp!
