QuestionThanks for the suggestion. Do I need to dig up the yard to reseed or can simply distrubite the seed after a few weeks?
Thanks

Question -
I live in Northeast, Ohio About 4 years ago, I purchased this house.
I noticed almost right away that certain areas of the lawn had patches of low growing very dense grass. Someone told me it is fescu. The blades are somewhat of a silver compared the the bluegrass.
I killed some of it and planted a mixture of bluegrass. That seemed to work for a wile but the shorter, denser grass seems to be winning. I have pulled some of it up and it comes out in patches.
The area get sun about 6-7 hours a day. The grass area is 200 by 100. Sohould I give up and let the lawn do what it wants to. It looked good May and June but I staarted losing the battle in July. We also had a great deal of rain and the soil is clay and has PH 7.0 Thanks

I am not able to identy the grass type, but it certainly sounds very aggressive. I would eradicate the areas with this grass type by using Round-Up (will also kill fescue) and then reseed using KB/P.rye mixes. Soil and pH is ok for KB/P.rye.
AnswerBest result is had with good soil/seed contact. Seeding over hard, compact soil generally does not give good result. Minimum, try to scarify the soil with a thatch rake or other mechanical equipment. You can try to spread grass seeds over the existing (dead) grass after cutting it low (scalping), but I usually recommend some soil preparation. You do not need to till the soil deeply. Some shallow soil preparation is recommended, however.
