QuestionHello, hope you can help. I live in central Jersey and my lawn was doing good until 1 month ago. I use the Scotts program and have been satisfied until now. I have these weeds that look like a large blades of grass but grow twice as fast. The lawn looks good until 2 days later then the weeds just outgrow the grass. I cant find a picture of them anywhere. Do you know what kind of weeds these are and how to get rid of them. Almost every lawn I see in my area has them but my lawn is the worst. I water the lawn 3 times a week for 20 min. Thanks for your time on this subject. Brian
AnswerHi Brian;
That description fits quite a few weeds, and some plants that are planted as border plants.
The best way to get them identified is to pull some of it up and take it to a nursery and ask them.
Without seeing it, it is too hard to guess.
Organics will get rid of weeds and insects you don't want.
Fertilizers feed the vegetation, including the weeds, but they don't enrich the soil. Some claim to, but they don't.
Weeds love poor soil and won't thrive in rich soil.
In a healthy enviornment, beneficial microbes will work round the clock enriching the soil, and beneficial insects and critters ( lizards, toads, grass snakes etc) will eat harmful insects. Toads love slugs, and they are three eat ants, army worms,and grubs etc.

Dry molasses,( or sugar) will nourish those beneficial microbes.
