Question I have read your replies regarding "safe to use in Summer" Fertilizers. I too applied Weed & Feed product 2 days before the Temperatures soared into the Nineties. I live in Central Indiana (Blue Grass, Rye and Red Fescue Lawn). Is there anything I can do to minimize/reverse the effects? Will frequent watering hurt or help? Thank you.
AnswerYes water frequently for a while to ensure the product is wash into the root zone. Then keep the grass hydrated by watering regularily to avoid stress on the grass during hot months. Note: the recommended watering practise for lawns is to water infrequently and deeply such as once per week for 1 hour i/o 15 minutes daily. However, in very hot summer months, you can water more frequently such as twice per week or even 3 times per week but still water deeply when you do water to flush the root zone to a dept of 6-8". Avoid frequent shallow applications.
To make it clear:
- I do not recommend fertilizing a cool season lawn (Kentucky Bluegrass, Perennial Ryegrass, Red Fescue) in summer.
- Although some fertilizers claim to be "safe to use" on any grass, any time I still do not recommend fertilizing in summer on cool season lawns
- It does not matter if you use synthetic or organic fertilizers, a cool season lawn should not be fertilized in summer.
- I recommend that you fertilize in late spring, early fall and late fall.
