QuestionWe just bought our first home, we never had to care for any plants much less Grass. when we moved grass was very green and it took us about one month to cut it( we didn't have a lawn mower). Since the grass has turned yellow sound crunchy now 50/50 green and yellow. Question ARE
How do we figure out what kind of grass? Fertilizer or not tempertaures during summer 90 degrees? How ofter to water? or is it too late?
Hope u can help. Thanks
AnswerHi Imelda;
Water it right away. Really soak it.
I always water to a depth of at least 6 inches, to encourage a deep root system.
the deeper roots help protect the grass from heat, cold and/or drought conditions.
I wouldn't fertilize it. chemicals create problems, they don't solve them.
After you soak it really well, any that is not dead should start turning green.
the best way to determine what kind of grass it is, is to dig up a small plug of t, and take it to a nurseryman and ask what kind it is. When they see it, they can tell you what it is.
Read my answers on using an organic program. My profile is full of questions about lawn problems.
If you have a hard time finding them, write me back, and I will copy some of the infoprmation and send it to you.
An organic program will give you a gorgeous lawn and garden, at less expense and less hard work.
What I would do now if I were you, is to water immediately. Then tomorrow or in the next few days, go buy enough sugar to cover your lawn with 1 pound sugar per 200 to 250 sq.ft.
I broadcast the sugar by hand ( the kind you use for tea etc), and then water it in well.
Sugar nourishes beneficial microbes that enrich the soil. When you have good, rich soil, weeds won't grow and thrive. If they come up, they will soon die out by themselves.
When you use organics, you make a healthy enviornment for toads, lizards and grass snakes, that will eat harmful insects that invade your lawn, so you don't ever have to put down poisons to kill them.
After watering well, you should start to see some difference in no more that 3 or 4 days. What doesn't start to green up by then is probably dead, and you can put sod or grass plugs in the bare areas and start it spreading to cover well.
After a few days after you water, write me and tell me what difference you see, and what kind of grass the nurseryman says you have.
We will go from there to get your lawn healthy and beautiful.
