Question
Thank you for your reply! I forgot to mention, that my driveway is 10,000 square feet - much too big to do by hand. I did just try epsom salts in a high concentration and it seems to be working already! There is a vinegar that is made for this type of application as it is concetrated, with a very high ph. If the salts don't work, I'm trying that next.
As to the ice melt, somone once told me "calcim chloride" is that right? I do notice that different melts have different chemicals. I don't use for ice, normally. But, I sure would love to get the right kind and then put it on in the spring.
I appreciate your "clueing me in" about the corn gluten meal - I see there is no point in putting it on in fall, I thought that it was hihg in nitrogen and it would act as fertilizer. As to adding more seed, that I have done - occasionally. Since I am on an acre, though, it would be hard to water to that extent...any suggestions? What aboutt he grass that comes in the hay?
Thanks,
Glory

Answer
Corn gluten meal can be used as fertilizer in fall, but do not apply 6 months within time you wish to overseed the lawn.

Calcium choride is a salt and so is magnesium sulfate (epsom salt). Both works by drawing moisture from the plants roots preventing the plants from taking up nutrients and water. You can use table salt for this purpose, too.

I do not recommend that you use hay with seeds. I prefer to use straw that is sold for use on lawns (heated to kill seeds).

By the way, vinegar lowers the pH rapidly which is what kills the grass and weeds. Vinegar which is an acid does not raise pH.
