QuestionCan you help me with a black possible mold problem in my lawn? The company that put my sprinkler system in has me set for 3 times a day, 1 am, 6 am, 6 pm waterings. In certain areas I am getting what looks like blackness on the surface. The lawn was seeded about 7 weeks ago. Will lime help this situation?
We have junk for soil.
Please help.
AnswerIf the lawn was seeded 7 weeks ago I persume the seeds have sprouted and started to grow ? Affirmatively, gradually start to increase the time between watering and the amount of water you apply. In 3-4 weeks try to water once per week for 1 hour instead of 3 times daily.
The 3 x daily waterings are only used during seeding period. The grass seeds must be kept consistently moist to germinate (sprout). If they dry out, they die. This is why we water frequently (3 x per day).
However, if you have black mold it is time to stop watering and let the lawn dry between waterings. You can do this by gradually transition to an infrequent but deep watering pattern as above. A mature lawn (+6 weeks old) should be watered infrequently and deeply (1 x per week for 1 hour i/o daily).
If the grass seeds have not germinated yet, then i doubt they ever will. It is time to re-seed but do let the soil dry out first to kill the mold before trying again.
Sorry to hear about your experiences.
Don't worry about your soil. Grass will grow in most types of soil.
