QuestionWe built a new home and we are trying to grow grass. We put down top soil and grass seed and fertilizer nothing else. Recently we noticed what appears to be moss or mold? The soil has a green coating on it but it doesn't seem to be growing into anything which makes me think maybe it isn't moss. Could I have mold or a type of lawn disease. I have also notice a rust colored patches on other parts of the soil. I have no idea what to do. Will baking soda help? There are also alot of strange bugs on the lawn. There are two I keep noticing. I though we had ladybugs but they are more orange, have the same shape but are a soft shelled bug. There are also alot of blue speckeled bugs. I live in Nova Scotia, Canada.
AnswerDon't worry about the insects. The green coating is probably green mold which happens on surfaces which stays consistently damp (never dries out). This is normal and something you can not entirely prevent since you need to keep the seeds damp until they sprout. Rust colored patches are probably just that: a lawn disease called RUST which is orange spores which grow. It is also common on newly seeded lawns, and I would not worry about it now.
Once the new grass has sprouted, gradually change to an infrequent but deep watering pattern (over a period of a few weeks) such as once per week for 2 hours instead of several times per day.
Good luck
