Summer care

Question
I have not been doing much this month with the lawn. My wife is on my case about fertilizer. I was not aware that there was anything to do but keep the grass watered, we have Kentucky Bluegrass front and back and it looks fine to me, just maybe a little peeked, due to the summer heat, no sign of any kind of problem that I can see, no grubs, no circles. Just for the sake of peace of mind I need something from an "expert" to show her and she'll leave me alone. RSVP

Answer
Do not fertilize kentucky bluegrass, or any other cool season grass (such as fescue, perennial ryegrass) in summer. Fertilize in late spring and early fall and then again in late fall. Do not fertilize in hot summer months.

Scott's and others advertise fertilizers with "summer guard" which is safe to use on lawns in summer. This is not recommended however. Just because it is safe, does not mean it is a good idea. Cool season lawns should not be fertilized in summer.

I am not trying to tell you want you want to hear. I am simply stating what I know is a fact about kentucky bluegrass. You do nothing for the lawn by fertilizing in summer. You help your grass by mowing it regularily, but you should only fertilize in fall and late spring.
