QuestionI live in south central texas and have very sandy soil. We moved to our house, which is out in the country, about 5 years ago. Last year I planted some carpet grass squares in my front and back yard. With last years very hot and dry summer, most of the carpet grass died, I thought. This spring I started an intense watering program, and have carpet grass starting to come back to life. The only issue that I have is there are TONS of stickerburrs emerging with the carpet grass. I have heard that there are sveral ways to eliminate the stickerburrs with chemicals, but I was wondering if there was anything organic that would work? I have read several articles on line pertaining to organic yard care. Is it true that cornmeal and sugar are benifical in helping eliminate weeds and growing a beautiful lawn? Any response would be appreciated.
AnswerHi Mike;
Sugar nourishes the beneficial microbes that enrich soil. Weeds like poor soil and will not thrive in righ soil.
Howard Garrett says the best weed and feed he knows is cornmeal gluten.That is what is left when they make corn syrup.
I think nurseries that carry organics carry it. I don't know if Calloways do or not, haven't checked yet, but they do carry quite a few organics products.
Howard Garrett recommends dry molasses, but you use 10 pounds per 1000 sq.ft.
I like the results I get with sugar better, and i only use 1 pound per 250 sq.ft. so it takes a lot less for the same area. 10 pounds of sugar would cover 500 sq.ft.
I joined Howard Garrett's ground crew ( paid my yearly fee and get full access to his site. The forums, and his video library. the web address is www.dirtdoctor.com if you want to check it out.
