QuestionCharlotte....
I have a new bermuda sod yard ( second season) and it seems the builder left or backfilled with some REALLY large rocks. I now have spots in the other wise healty yard that are dying or going into dormancy. I can't dig them up, although I have tried! They are generally four or five inches below the ground and can cover and area that is five feet or better around. Is there anything we can do to keep a green yard?
AnswerHi Guy;
The only thing you can do is have the rocks removed, or build the soil up to a depth that the things can grow.
about 8 to 10 inches of soil, if the soil under the rocks is loose enough for good drainage, should be enough for grass.
If you can prove the rocks were put there by the builder, you would probably have a good case for making the builder remove them at his expense.
If the rocks were already there, and the builder just left them, then you are probably out of luck.
Do your neighbors have large rocks in their properties too?
Is the soil under and around the rocks loose soil, or is it clay?
If it is clay, you need to ad things to loosen it up. If it is good soil, with good drainage, the water should drain off around the rocks, and deeper soil should grow grass.
