QuestionI have seen sugar mentioned before. How much do you apply per 1000 sq. feet? Also,I applied a preemergent crabgrass killer early this spring. What do I need to do in these bare areas in order for more bluegrass seed to germinate?

Question -
I had a yard last year with a little bit of everything, mostly bermuda grass that I wanted to get rid of.So early last fall I applied round-up and killed the whole yard.I then sowed the area with midnight bluegrass. The seed came up well, just wish I had staeted a week or so earlier.Any way the yard looked good this spring when we left on vacation. We were gone for 3 weeks and when we got back the grass was at least 8 to 10 inches high.I cut it back to 6 inches and then to 4 inches. There were spots where the grass had gotten really high and then fell over. This grass has died and no there are just dead spots in the yard. Not many but a few.I am watering these areas in hopes of getting the surrounding bluegrass to spread into these areas. The main problem I am having now is that suddenly it seems half the yard is yellowing on the tips of the grass blade. What would cause this?We had a really cool spring and in the last 2 weeks temps are in the upper 80s to low 90s,with not much rain.Could the grass just be under stress?Any suggestions would be greatly azpperciated.
AnswerHi doug. Nothing you do will make seed germinate in the area. Pre-emergent means just that. It prevents ANY seed from germinating.
What they don't tell you on that stuff is, it also keeps bulb flowere from coming up, like lilies, irises, tuliops etc.
Chemicals on the lawn are just a TERRIBLE MISTAKE.
They do a LOT more harm, and the little bit of good that do is short lived, except what they do to the soil.
The only way you will get grass in that area is to put on some sod or sod plugs.
NO kind of seed is going to grow.
Sorry, but that is just some of the awful truth I am learning about chemicals.
Chemicals CAUSE the problems, they don't fix them.
