QuestionI live in West Palm Beach, FL, a couple of weeks ago I sprayed my st augustine lawn with liquid feed N weed. Now my grass is starting to turn brown, some areas more than others. I used the whole bottle, did I over sprayed? if so, what can I do? I have been watering everyday for the last few days. Please advise. Thanks.
AnswerFirst check on the lable of the product that the weed-and-feed was safe to use on st. augustine grass (most of these herbicide products are not). It would state to avoid st. augustine grass.
Secondly, the product usually comes with a coverage area, such as 10,000 sq feet, 5,000 sq feet etc. Refer to bottle information. If you have vastly exceeded the recommendation then that could be a problem.
Finally, if used above 85F the herbicides tend to become volitile.
If one or more of the above applies, or if your grass is dying anyway, the best you can do is to water regularily and wait. Sometimes, herbicides will kill green growth but not the plants themselves and they will resprout. If everything else fails, you may have to reseed/re-sod.
Note:
- once in a while, I have clients who pickup a bottle of weed killer, but this is not the normal weed killer, it is brush/patio killers which is used to clear areas where you (never) want plants to grow again. These will damage all vegetation and/or damage the soil, too.
I would recommend that you check the lable carefully to make sure that it was a weed-and-feed product, and not one of those "all vegetation killers" or "weed and grass killers".
