depends on what you mean by small dirt piles? i'm not the amazing kreskin.
without seeing them i can only venture a guess. could be goose poop, worm hole remenants, insect adult emergent holes...? normally they will go away after it rains.
it would also depend where you live. i'm in southern NJ. take a photo(if jpeg digital - send them to me @  [email protected]    ). or take photos to your local garden center/nursery to see if they can help you.

photos to your local garden center/nursery to see if they can help you. ask them about lawncare in your area. texas is much warmer than NJ.
sounds like insect emergent holes. could be ants(fireants or other). very common this time of the year as larval stages of insects awaken to become adults. poop appearance is probably good topsoil.
