QuestionI live in New York State - zip 12533. One of my coworkers has thyme growing throughout her lawn and I'd like the same. Is it possible to mix thyme with grass seed when reseeding?
AnswerGood morning Karen:
I rarely receive questions such as yours. Usually people try to keep vegetation other than turfgrass out of their yard. You must remember that a weed is any form of vegetation that is growing in an area that it is unwanted. In your case you are putting what most people would call a weed in your lawn. I would suggest that you use the thyme as a ground cover and contain it in its own area. There are different kinds of thyme such as lemon, woolly, and creeping. I would assume that creeping thyme would be your best choice as it is a low growing plant.

After all this, and you still wish to mix the thyme into your lawn, I would ask the coworker if she would give or sell you a few sprigs of the plant. Plant them a few feet apart in your lawn and let them spread. Each year take some sprigs of your new plants and place them where you want them. Over a few years your lawn should be invaded with thyme especially if you cut your grass to a height of 2 to 2 ?inches so that the thyme will receive the sun that it requires.
Have a good thyme in your lawn!
