QuestionLocated in central NC. Cannot get brown patch
under control in a lawn that is only 6 mons. old.
Have used a probuct from a home store several
times this summer with little effect. Will the grass survive left untreated or is there a better
product to use.
Thanks, John
AnswerBrown patch is very common in newly planted lawns especially during very hot, humid conditions.
The best you can do is to water infrequently but deeply (e.g. such as twice per week for 2 hours each time rather than 15 minutes daily). Water in the early morning or alternatively after first dew fall. Mow the lawn regularily and recycle clippings to the lawn. Fertilize in spring and fall if you grow fescue, kentucky bluegrass or perennial ryegrass. Do not fertilize until late september with the above grasses. If you grow bermuda, st.augustine, zoysia or centipede, you should starting june though august, e.g. fertilize once now.
Once patch disease show up in a lawn it is practically impossible to control. The fungicides are best used preventiatively. Your best choice is to introduce healthy manage routines as explained above, and then tough it out for next year.
Sorry to hear. Good news is that it is usually not serious if the lawn is otherwise well managed.
