QuestionI started a bed and had planted little gardina plants about a month ago. about two weeks ago I overseeded my lawn with bermuda seed, some how the seeds got in the flower bed and they have started to grow. My question is can I put a weed barrier and mulch on top to kill the grass or do you think it will continue to grow? what should I do?
AnswerHi Val;
You can put in edger, but put it pretty deep. You want to establish a deep root system so your burmuda will do well, and those runners will sneak under an edging that is only a couple of inches deep. I would bury it 4 to 6 inches, and let it stick up a good 2 inches above the level of the bed. Maybe bury it, and put a rock or brick edging around the top of the edger, to make it even prettier.
You could pull up all the burmuda shoots you see, and put landscape cloth or at least 4 inches of newspaper for mulch, and cover it with at least 3 inches of bark mulch, 4 inches would even be better. You are cutting all the sun off the grass roots and sprouts so they won't grow.
If you use newspaper (it will compost in a couple of years) be sure to NOT use any pages with colored ads or pictures on them. a tad won't bother too much, but a lot of it will.
The colored inks they use are toxic to plants.
Don't use the shiny type pages, like magazines or sale catalogs. They have a waxy surface on them that can melt into and smother your plant roots.
Use just the black and white pages, and lap them over, so if they move a little when they are watered, they won't let seedlings of grass in.
That should pretty well take care of it. You may see one pop up occasionally, but just pull them up, and get all the root you can.
If the grass gets any sun it will grow.
For some reason, it takes less sun for grass to thrive in your flower beds, where you don't want it, than it takes to grow it in your lawn.
Hope that helps solve your problem.
