QuestionI read where you recommended sugar for lawn fertilizing... I would love some details please!!
1) How much/ how often/ and when should I apply it?
2) How do I spread it?
3) What type of sugar?
4) Is it safe for Bahia lawns? (I have Pensacola Bahia)
5) How quickly can you see results?
Thank you very much for your time, I'd never heard of sugar for fertilizer before!
Thanks!

AnswerSugar is NOT a fertilizetr.
In every one of my posts, I explain that sugar keeps alive the beneficial microbes that enrich soil.
I also atate that I use 1 pound per 250 to 300 sq.ft, and I broadcast it by hand, and water it in well.I apply it each spring and fall.
It is plain granulated sugar.
It is safe for all grasses and plants. It has NOTHING in it that will harm plants.
How fast you see results depends on how good the condition of your soil is to begin with.
There are other factors to having beautiful lawn.
A proper watering program is very important.
Shallow watering will cause the roots to come to the surface to get water, and they are more susseptible to heat and cold damage,
I always water to a depth of at least 6 inches.
The basic principle behind this is, weeds like poor soil. They will not thrive in rich soil.
When a drought hits, all the grass dies, and all you have that will grow is the weeds.
Mske rich soil, follow a proper watering program to encourage a deep root system, and worry about planting and growing grass, the rich soil and the thick grass will take care of the weeds.
If tour soil is not loose enough (clay) or too loose ( too sandy) you need to add some things to correct it to a good, loose, sandy loam soil.
Weed killers, chemical fertilizers, and insecticides kill out the good bugs you want to benefit your lawn, the beneficial microbes, earthworms etc. Earthworms tunnel through the soil aerating, and their castings (poop) enriches. Don't do away with cockroaches. they live in the soil naturally, and they are even better about aerating than the earthworms.
To keep them out of my house, I put a small sprig ( about 1 inch long) of fresh rosemary on each pantry shelf, under each cabinet, a little longer piece under the fridge, washer and dryer etc, anywhere roaches can come in or hide.
I never see a roach, spider or silverfish etc in my house. I have tons of roaches tunneling through my soil.
I use no chemiclas. I use cedar bark mulch to keep away ternites and a whole slew of other bad insects.
Kitty cats don't use my flower beds or plant containers for their litter bixes, because I sprinle chopped lemon peel (fresh lemons) scattered in them.
Fresh orange peels, chopped, repel fire ants and keep them out of your yard.
If you want to know more about my natural critter repellants, wrte me and I will list all the good ones I have tried and use.
I just wish I had known all this stuff 59 years ago. I might still have a working back and knees.Organic gardening is more about what you DON'T do, rather that what you do.
Happy gardening.
