Lawn Ivy.

Question
Hello,  I'm not even sure what the real name of this "growth" is.  I have heard that it is called Lawn Ivy.  However that is what some one who never saw my lawn said it was.  Anyway it looks like Ivy, it grows everywhere and anywhere.
It has little purple flowers on it in some places.  I  put weed and feed on my lawn 2 times
a year plus winter feed plus another furtilizer.
This stuff just wont go away.  Please help me
eradicate this lawn pest.
Thank you.   Pat Moreau

Answer
Weed-and-feed lawn fertilizer contain a herbicide which kill certain types of broadleaved weeds. Others it can not kill. It is also called a "selective" herbicide because it kill only certain species.

You probably need a non-selective herbicide, such as Round-Up (glypsophate) which will kill weeds AND grass. after control has been acheived, you must reseed the lawn.

This herbicide does not translocate through the soil and you can therefore reseed immediately. there is no residue. It is taken in through the leaves and when dry, it is safe to reseed.

You may have to spray several times for full control. Even so, in future, keep your eye out of any strands which missed and hand pull these.
