QuestionHello. I live in NE NJ. A 60 sq. ft. section of my back lawn is in the shade, north of a maple tree. The area also gets slight run-off from a patio. I have been unable to keep grass growing properly there. I have added top soil and seeded with shade type seed over the past 2 years without much success. Some of the area is flat, some moderately sloped. Area base soil appears to be clay type. Tree roots do show slightly in a few areas. Seeding attempts do take at first, but grow weak. Entire lawn is cared for by ChemLawn. I keep them away from area when seeding/fertilizing. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you for your valued time.

AnswerI have the same problem near a large maple tree. The truth is that it is a never ending battle. I recommend one of 3 actions:
1. get rid of the tree
2. create a shade garden and mulch paths / playareas
3. continue to overseed the area every spring and fall. water regularily through the summer, and be preparred to spend a serious amount of time on it.
I personally recommend 1. or 2.
