QuestionMy dog has a favorite spot to eliminate. He uses the same area all winter so there is a huge amount of urine frozen along with snow and ice.As the snow thaws, quite quickly, this huge amount of urine is exposed in a short amount of time. The smell is overwhelming and seems rancid. My concern right now is not the dead grass, the damage is done and there isn't much I can do. I have found out a few remedies to help stop the urine from destrying the grass such as lime or table sugar watered in and diluting urine as he goes.My question is: Are any of these things going to help me neutralize the huge amount of pee if only to get rid of the smell?
AnswerHi Natalie.
When I lived in Denver, I had the same problem. I flooded the area with water. That washes the water down deeper through the soil. past the grass roots.
Water very well, and when it dries enough to absorb more water, do it again.
That will wash the acid down through the soil, and get it under the base of the roots, where they won't be affected by it. Further waterings will continue to wadh it down deeper. It will surely help the odor A LOT!!! It may not revive the grass there, but when you get ost of that acid out of the soil, you can plug in some grass and it should grow.
I don't know if it neutralizes the urine, but Simple solution kills dog and cat urine odor in the house. Maybe it neutralizes. I get simple solution at Petsmart, and other pet stores. You could water the area well, then dump a solution of Simple solution over the area. I would mix Simple solution 1 part Simp sol and 1 part water, and pit it in a garden spayer, and spray the area, after I watered in the urine well. You may have tp repeat the SS and water solution in a couple of days.
The urine is not the problem, it is the acid in the urine that damages the grass. something to raise the PH level and make it more alkaline would work some.
