QuestionMy front yard has nearly 10 instances of a bizarre fungus that is amorphous (not symmetrical) in shape. (These do not occur in my back yard.) Its body is very tough and rubbery and a shovel is needed to remove it. If it is not removed, it keeps growing larger and larger. The one in our flower bed is almost 12" across. In some places it looks like it is bubbling up or oozing out of the ground. It ranges from creamy white color to dark gold-brown. We have hybrid bermuda grass and live in the Bakersfield California area. One consultant said that this fungus might be coming from the rotting roots of 3 Liquid Amber trees (sugar maples) we used to have in the front yard. This may account for why we do not see them in our back yard.
Is there anything we can do to kill these things? I heard that Elite 45 made by Bayer, might work.
I have taken some digital pictures of the stuff and would be happy to send them to you. It is very bizarre and I have not seen any examples of these on the internet before.
Thanks,
Frank
AnswerGood Morning Frank:
I am sending you two web sites that may explain your dilemma in regard to the mushrooms.
It appears that the consultant you spoke to is right on track. I have not tried the product that appears in the second web site but it may be worth a try considering the other remedy involving a shovel and a lot of work. Most of us in the mid-west experience the "Fairy Ring". The remedy is too drastic and we usually let it take its course of consuming the organic matter in the soil. Another problem you may experience as time goes on is the grass will begin to lose its color in the areas of the mushrooms.
