Beet juice

Question
Pretty soon all too agressive chemicals will be ban for lawn care against weed,it is already the case for properties on lakes or in big cities,is it true that BEET JUICE could replace those chemicals or is there any other soft product who can do the job. THANKS

Answer
Hello Alain;
Sugar is what I use.
If it were the juice of sugar beets, then yes, it would work, but sugar would be much cheaper, and less messy. not all beets are sugar beets, and the regular table beets do not have enough sugar in them to do any good, and to get enough juice to spray your yard, would cost a fortune.
The organic gardener I read advised dry molasses, but that was not available in my area then.He had written that of you couldn't get dry molasses, plain table sugar would do as well.
What the sweet products do is NOT kill weeds. Rather they keep alive the beneficial microbes that enrich soil.
Weeds love poor soil. They do not thrive in rich soil.    once you start putting sugar down, or dry molasses, the weeds will still come up in the spring, but just mow them with the rest of the grass, after a few weeks, you will not see them. About 2 to 4 years after you start using the sugar or dry molasses, the soil will be rich enough the weeds will not even come up.
Since I started using sugar. I have not used fertilizer. The rich soil feeds the grass all it needs. Fertilizers do not enrich the soil, they feed the vegetation.
Make rich soil, and the grass and trees will do well, and other plants as well, and weeds will not be a problem. Stop using insecticides. Let the lizards, toads and grass snakes have a safe haven in your yard. They will eat more bad bugs than the insecticides will kill, and they will not eat the earthworms that are also good for your lawn.
I make compost from our raked leaves, as well as the raked leaves of neighbors that are going to throw them away, and all the raw vegetable waste from my kitchen. Put the weeds your neighbors pull or dig up, in the compost pile, the heat generated from the compost will kill the seeds, and the rotted weeds will add feed for your grass and garden.
I put melon seeds in the compost too. As I said, the heat will literally cook the seeds, and they will not germinate.
The sugars in the melons or other fruit peels will act the same as sugar in your compost.
In the spring, I have lots of good composted soil to top dress my lawn and garden.
Organic gardening is by far the easiest and cheapest and best way to go. I wish I had known all this 40 years ago, I would have been saved a lot of labor, and had a better looking lawn and garden all along.
Trees love rich soil too, so the trees that are seeded in by the birds, wind etc, will still come up. If you don't want them, you will still have to pull or dig them out.
If you want to know more about organics, write me. I love to share what I have learned.
Charlotte
