QuestionI want to put in sod. The area was weed infested. what to do with seed that is on the ground?
AnswerEasy!!
First make sure you have good, loose soil. If you have clay or too much sand, you are not going to have a good lawn.
If your soil is clay, add things to loosen it up. Peat moss, humus, bark mulch are all good for loosening soil, or you can get landscapers or planters mix. It is a good mixture of the above. till it in with your soil.
Put down the sod, then put dry molasses or plain table sugar down and water it in well.Water to at least 6 inches deep. I use 1 pound sugar to about 250 to 300 sq.ft of yard.
Don't fertilize, unless you just want to.
Fertilizer kills beneficial microbes that enrich soil, dry molasses, or sugar keeps them alive. If you DO choose to fertilize, put down the sugar and water both in together.
Weeds like poor soil. They don't thrive in rich soil, so don't worry about the weeds, make rich soil, the weeds will stop even trying to come up after a couple of years. The weeds that do come up, will disappear after a few mowings, and in a couple of years, they won't ebven try to come up.
Every 5 or 6 years, my grass gets a little yellowish. I just put down some chelated iron.
Fertilizer feeds the vegetation, it doesn't make rich soil. When you have good rich soil, you will not need fertilizers or weed killers.
I use all natural remedies for insectides inside and outside. You never see a roach, silverfish, ant, spider etc inside my house. I don't have fire ants or termites.
The lizards, toads and grass snakes keep all the bad bugs off my roses and plants. Baking soda disolved in water keeps black spot off my roses, and white powdery mildew off my plants that are apt to have that problem. Houseflies don't come in through open doors and windows, and cats don't use my flower beds for their litterbox.
