QuestionI have vetch taking over my lawn. I live in Egg Harbor New Jersey. How do I get rid of this?
AnswerHi Dolores Garbutt,
There are about 150 species of plants called 'Vetches' and all are related to the more common weedy plants called 'Clover'. Look for broad-leaf herbicides at your local lawn and garden store which target clover and similar leguminous weeds. Vetch or 'Vica' may be mentioned on the label, but if the chemical is effective against Clovers it should also work on Vetch.
Where the weed is in a dense patch, you can use a total kill herbicide such as ROUND-UP to easily eradicate it. This will leave a dead bare spot you will have to re-seed or sod with your wanted turf grass.
Keep the weedy plant from making flowers and dropping its seed, and you will also be able to reduce its population on your land.
Good Luck,
