AnswerFertilize in late spring and early fall. Always apply fertilizer to a dry lawn and then water in immediately with plenty of water. You can core aerate first and then fertilize right after. Do not fertilize in hot summer months.
Lawn weeds can generally be divided into two main groups: annual grassy weeds (e.g. crabgrass) and perennial broadleaf weeds (dandelions, clover, strawberry weeds, etc).
Apply a broadleaf weed control product to the lawn in late spring or early fall. You can do this as part of fertilizing, e.g. buy so-called weed-and-feed products. They should be applied to a WET lawn and leave the product on the grass (and weed) leaves for at least 24 hours and then water in well. Instead of applying as part of fertilizer you can also apply a standard liquid broadleaf weed control directly to the leaves at these times.
Crabgrass can be treated by putting down fertilizer w/pre-emergent herbicides. this need to be put down in early spring. check with a local garden center as to timing (very specific to each area). Apply to dry lawn and water in.
