QuestionI live About 60 miles southeast of Dallas Tx. I
was really impressed using Weed n Feed on my lawn last year. My new yard is half St. Agustine half stickers. When would be the best time to Weed n Feed? thanks....
AnswerHi Dori,
St. Augustine likes warm winters without freezes. If there has been some cold-weather, it may be slow to re-vive and there may be some areas to re-sod. I think it does better farther south and in the Gulf counties,... but there have been efforts to produce more cold-hardier varieties and maybe that's what you are using.
All warm-climate grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia,..etc.) should be perking-up as soon as the night-temperatures start to hover in the mid-fifties. With a few warm days, things may get going faster and you should be able to tell if and when the turf-grasses are actively taking-up nutrients from the root-zone. In Dallas, this is generally around the time you can plant your green-house tomato plants out-side without concern.
Be sure to follow the directions on the commercial fertilizer product packaging to know what to expect. Remember, all lawn fertilizers are formulas of SALTS,...so a good rule of thumb is this...
'Too little is always better than too much'.
Every year, there are so many home-owners who will use too much chemical wanting things to get super-green too fast,...but they end-up with a dead lawn!

With a good fertile-loamy well draining top-soil, best quality hybrid grass type(s), 1-3 inches of water per week, plenty of sun-light, ...almost anyone can have an excellent lawn with a minimum maintenance effort.
