using sugar for weed control in the lawn and garden

Question
I read a article That Charolette wrote about using sugar in her yard for killing off weed and that it worked I was wondering if it would work in the vegetable garden.Thank you from Randy

Answer
Have never used sugar, but straight distilled vinegar will kill individual weeds if you spray or pour some on them....it makes the soil too acidic to grow anything for about 2 months.  Then repeat.  Very inexpensive, organic treatment.  I don't think you would want to do this in a vegetable garden.  It is better to mulch and prevent weed growth in the first place.  We use organic alfalfa, grind it up in a shredder with composted manure, and put it around each row of vegetables about 2 inches thick.  Water it and it forms a crust that won't blow away.  Any weeds that do come up pull out really easily.  We till this into the soil in the fall when the garden is done.  For more information:  www.avant-gardening.com
