QuestionWill plowing Moss under kill it or make it spread? The reason I'm asking is because there is moss in a field that I intend on using as a garden.
AnswerDear Prince Avalache:
Plowing moss under will likely kill it if tilled to a reasonable depth. Consider what conditions created the moss:
Moss is usually the result of conditions that are not beneficial to good growth of turf. Moss is most commonly associated with shallow soils; poor soil fertility; low soil pH (acid soils); heavy shade; and excessive moisture. If any of these factors are limiting turf growth, moss can invade the surface and establish itself.
Considering the above; strongly recommend that you do the following:
1. Obtain soil samples and test the field to determine amendments that are likely needed to enrich the soil fertility and bring it to proper soil PH balance.
2. If the field is heavily invaded with moss, then consider the use of copper sulfate to eliminate it prior to plowing it under.
