Question
Green Bean
In Denver my green bean (Contender bush) sprouts are coming up looking like they have been chewed on. Radishes came up fine in this same raised garden bed.
I'm not sure what pest does this or if I have a soil or watering problem. I don't see much info on Japanese beetle grub damage in the garden.
I was watering lightly every morning but now just a good soak every other morning with a hose (once the sun is up). The soil could be better since this is the first year for vegi's in this garden. This area also gets some shade.
I'm going to try mulching with grass clippings in case the soil is drying up and also put beer out for slugs tonight.
Thanks for any help.
Brian
AnswerI would mulch and see if that helps. It looks like they are too wet at ground level, but I don't really know. I know they like to be on the dry, and sunny, side.
For slugs, if you have a fenced garden or a perimeter, you can mound up sawdust about 8 inches thick and make a little trench in the center of it and lay rock salt in the trench. Slugs will not be able to get in to the beds, and the sawdust keeps the salt from getting into the soil. We covered it with a 1 x 4 nailed to the fence posts about two inches above the sawdust trench of salt. You could just leave it open, but you will have to re salt more often. Once you get them out of the garden area, they will not come back....to get them out, you just have to go out there and remove them at night or early morning. There eggs are about the size of salmon eggs, only white, so if you dig around an find those, remove them too.
