QuestionHi,
We have an organic garden and aren't able to get any really good manure for fertilizing.
What do you suggest for building the (heavy) soil?
I've been thinking about liquid seaweed and fish emulsion
for next year...any ideas?
We live in Maine if that means anything...
Dave
AnswerHi Dave ... although manure is a great way to build healthy soil, it is by no means the only way. Anything that was once living is a wonderful amendment to your soil. My favorite "compost" material to use is actually rotted leaves. If you have leaves on your property, bag them up and then put them in a pile on a secluded part of your property. A good way to break them down fast is to layer leaves, grass clippings from mowing, leaves, repeat, repeat. Add a bit of alfalfa tea, seaweed, fish emulsion to get it going.
Also, if you do not want to wait for the leaves to decompose, feel free to shred them up and use them as mulch. It will make your garden soooooooo healthy.
Check with your local nurseries also. Most nurseries either offer, or they know who offer, a bagged compost/manure mixture that you can purchase and spread on your lawn and garden beds.
Good luck and feel free to question me anytime at all! I hope I was able to help you.
