QuestionSoil labeled organic, what does that mean as far as content? I am concerned about genetically modified matter that may be in plants or manure that may be in the product. 89% of soy and corn are GMO, also could be in animal feed, thus manure. Was thinking about Miracle Gro Organic Soil. Any info appreciated.
AnswerThe Institute of Science in Society is right up your alley:

Besides publishing a fascinating monthly magazine, this group is an unequalled powerhouse of data and information on issues related to genetic engineering and agriculture. Did you know, for instance, that Seed dealers in India are paid by chemical companies to push hybrid Seeds and Pesticides to Indian farmers? The farmers are told they must grow hybrid plants and use Pesticides in their farming, or their credit arrangement will be cancelled.
On the positive side, Wal-Mart, Nike, Woolworth and C&A (Belgium) ranked as the biggest users of organic Cotton last year. Countries that soak crops like Cotton in pesticides find the injuries done to the field workers can be devastating.
As for Miracle Gro Organic Choice Potting Soil, I would like to think Scotts is born again with moral standards to guide production and development. But let's not kid ourselves. This is a multinational company that is profit-driven. It is not their job to save the world; it is their job to generate profits for their stockholders, to build business so that their employees can make a living wage, to make money. Why would anything Miracle Gro makes be superior to, or even as good as, something you would either make at home or buy from a smaller supplier?
The materials I have seen, which are limited (and supplied by ISIS mentioned above) seem to indicate that Livestock on Organic Farms are not fed anything containing a GMO product. Organic packaged Manure or Compost therefore would seem to be safe, to me at least. I'd like to be corrected if I'm wrong. There are so many issues around the GMO controversy, it's hard for someone like me on the fringes to be up to date, but I must say I am encouraged to know there are people browsing thru AllExperts who worry about this. We need more people like you.
