yellowing leaves on tomatoes

Question
Hi Frank and Vicky,
We have had a somewhay cooler and wetter spring this year up to a week or so ago and now it's getting a bit dry. My garden looks great though exce[t a few days ago i noticed some of the lower leaves on a few of my tomatoes had some grey to brown freckles on them and had turned yellow. the rest of the plant looks good and i have lots of blossoms and small green tomatoes.Could this be early blight and if it is is there anything i can do for it I have been watering about twice a week or so to keep them consistently moist. Thanks for your help.
Jo

Answer
It sounds like it might be a TMV virus (Tobacco Mosaic Virus) if anyone has been smoking around the plants. Or cucumber mosaic and tomato spotted wilt. Symptoms are:

Leaves: Light and dark green or yellowish-green mottling and puckered areas. Narrower new leaves have a fern-like appearance on new growth.

Stems: brown streaks may develop on the stems and petioles.

Fruit: Green and yellowish-red mottling or rings. Sunken dark brown spots. Internal browning of fruit can occur if the plants are infected at fruit set.

If you have any of the above symptoms, I would remove the plants, or try removing the diseased stems:

Sterilize your hands by washing with a antibacterial soap and try removing the lower stems with tools dipped in a bleach solution, and then washed well.  If removing the diseased stems does not cure the plant, I would remove the plant and get new ones.  The diseases will spread to all plants.  Do not compost them.  Bury or burn them.
