QuestionI planted Blue Lake pole beans this spring, and as the sprouts began breaking the surface of the soil they were all attacked and killed by wood lice. I have never had this happen before. Any suggestions?
AnswerDear Dan:
Slaters also known as Wood Lice can chew the bean seeds as they germinate or shortly after germination. This normally happens if you have lots of organic matter in the soil or on top. To prevent or reduce those pests; remove the organic matter or ensure that your soil has well broken down organic matter (humus) so that the slaters can't breed and eat close to where you plant the beans.
