rabbit food

Question
I recently moved into a new house and am not yet sure about the soil. I am
not too sure about getting soil tested because it doesn't seem to me they care
about enough aspects of truely health soil, such as micronutrients, bacteria
and fungus.
I have heard about rabbit food as a good fertilizer and it makes some sense
to me. I will only be in this place for one year and have only a small plot. I will
plant a cover crop over part and fix some nitrogen but I was hoping to plant
some spring crops on the rest.
What about the rabbit food and any other comments on my plan is more than
welcome
Thanks for your time.

Answer
This is an excellent place to get your soil tested: http://www.al-labs-plains.com/index.html  The tell you more than you ever wanted to know, graphs and everything.  It is only $25.00.  Very worth it.

You can also just get a basic soil test from a local nursery and test it yourself, because you will need to know your pH, N,P,K ratios at the very least. But you will not get the details that you would from the professional soil test.

Balancing the soil (NPK) by adding nutrients is the most important aspect of growing a garden because 90% of the action takes place in the soil. The plant is the benefactor. Healthy soil equals healthy plants.  Healthy plants are able to better resist insect damage, etc. Insects usually attack the weakest plants.

Rabbit fertilizer is excellent, you can apply it right away, since it is a cold manure (does not need to be composted first) and it is very high in N. I would crumble it, and  mix it into the soil, and then I would add a 2 inch layer of it on top of the soil for a mulch.  Soil temperatures need to be kept constant to reduce plant stress.  If the roots are always cool and moist, plants will thrive. Mulch will not only keep your soil at its optimum, but it will also prevent weeds from growing.  The ones that do come up, pull out easily.

Please visit our website and see "Soil Building".  There is a lot of information about what nutrients you need, and how and when to add them, and lots more.

Good gardening!
