I plan to start an  asparagus garden this spring.I Plan on getting 25 Jersey Giant roots. Planting them about 15 inches apart.

My question.  How big of an area will the asparagus spears grow from 1 plant? Or do they grow just where you plant the roots ?

Dear Maggie:

The asparagus spears grow vertically, however the ferns tend to spread out vertically as well as horizontally.  Follow the directions that were provided with your plans as to spacing.  However, I would recommend that you consider increasing the distance between the plants if available space permits, perhaps up to 24 inches apart.
