QuestionI just had a recent sugar ant problem. They were on the kitchen counters, and I got rid of them finally with ant baits. As soon as I put out the baits, the problem seemed to disappear. I've been keeping the kitchen immaculate, (originally, crumbs were the source) but now they have taking a liking to my dishwasher! I've only seen a few so far, but I tried to clean the dishwasher out with vinegar, and they are still present.
I put an ant trap on the outside of the dishwasher--between that and my refrigerator. There is no room for the trap to lay flat since the refrigerator and dishwasher are so close together. I laid it on its side, and it's far enough in so that my cats won't get to it. Is that a good place for the bait, or should I set another one on my counter above where the dishwasher is too? I don't want this to turn into a major problem. Thank you for any advice you can give me.
AnswerChristine,
Ant baits should be placed near ant trails or other activity. The idea is to place bait as close as possible to the ants so they have a good chance of finding it. See http://www.livingwithbugs.com/ant_control.html for more suggestions. You also might consider one of the commercial baits if the colonies are large (see http://www.livingwithbugs.com/ant_bait.html for details).
