Longhorned Beetle Threat

Question
Dear Expert,

I had kept a bunch of mango seeds by my window. The seeds were supposed to be planted in my garden.

But yesterday I found a Longhorn Beetle resting on one of the seed in the bunch. I was unaware of it's threat and left it undisturbed. The beetle was sitting on the mango seeds for a whole day.

While searching info about the longhorn beetles, I found that they are serious threat to the trees, because they lay eggs in the barks.

I wish to know, can a longhorn beetle layeggs in the big mango seed? If yes, should I skip planting seeds from the bunch as it will harm my whole garden? I am afraid that the beetle migh have laid it's eggs in the seed and larvea may come out.

Waiting for your reply!

Answer
Sarvesh,

There are many species of longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae) so you would have to identify to species the one that you found in order to determine if it is a pest of mango. However, my guess is that it is not a threat to your garden since eggs are not normally laid in the seeds of host plants.
