Questionwill raid ant spray harm my sawtooth oak tree. i have ants and catapillows in and on my tree. thanks.
AnswerYes the chemical make up of Raid can cause damage to the leaves of plants. I would recommend that you either spray with Orthene if the tree is small enough to reach the foliage with the spray or there is an insecticide called Bayer Advanced Tree and Shrub Insect Control. This is used on large trees that you can not spray easily. The Bayer product is applied to the soil around the tree and the roots carry it to the leaves and twigs and when the caterpillars feed on the leaves they are killed. It does take a week or so for the full effect to reach the top of larger trees but it will protect the tree for the season. I would try both--spray with the Orthene for a quick kill and apply the Bayer product for prevention of more caterpillars.
The ants are more than likely feeding on honeydew produces by scale insects. These scales will suck the plant juices form the plant and secrete a substance called honeydew which is high in sugar content and sticky.. The ants feed on this sugar. The Bayer product will kill the scales and the ants will go away.
Here is a web link to the Bayer product--check with your local garden type store for these products.
