QuestionDid you mean what you said about taking all the catawba works one could grow in alabama? Because we live in Alabama and are infested. Any suggestions? We recently planted apple and peach trees and they have eaten the leaves off of it as well a small and very young rose bush. What can be used and where can it be purchased?
Answercheck with a local bait shop that sells live bait and they I am sure would gladly take them. BUT I am not sure this is Catawba worms since Catalpa tree is its only host plant. Sounds like maybe eastern Tent caterpillar which is common in the spring on a large number of host trees. You can spray the trees with an Biological insecticide callt BT. Young larvae may be treated with Bacillus thuringiensis var kurstaki, or Bt. Bt is a naturally occurring bacteria that interferes with the caterpillar's ability to digest food. It must be applied to the foliage of the infested trees. The caterpillars ingest Bt as they eat, and will stop eating immediately and die within a few days. You do not need to spray the tents or the caterpillars. Late instar caterpillars, especially those that are already migrating to pupate, cannot be treated effectively with Bt.
