Insect on pool patio

Question

Insect
Hello Jack! My husband and I recently purchased a house in Henderson, NV. We have seen a few different critters that we cannot identify, from huge (kind of fuzzy) tan spiders with black undersides and diamond-type designs on torso to these teeny tiny black insects which I am currently investigating. We have a nice pool out back with a concrete patio that is covered in these little critters. I have had them crawling on me while sitting on the patio or squatting down next to pool. I recently found one inside near my toddler's toys. (I'm assuming it came in the house on him.) My husband and I have noticed a few very small itchy bumps occasionally while working on the pool. Could it be from these insects? Is there a way to "shoo" them away from the pool so we can enjoy the pool without flicking bugs off of us all summer?
Thank you so much for your help.

Answer
Julie,

This is the larva of a ladybird beetle (ladybug) (see http://www.livingwithbugs.com/harmonia.html for a picture of the adult). You must have a tree that overhangs the pool (?) because these larvae are usually found on plants where they feed on aphids. They don't bite so the bites you are getting are more likely mosquitoes or possibly biting midges. Post a follow up if you have questions.
