raccoons in a vaulted no access ceiling

Question
Hello,
We moved into a home 20 years old in July of 2010. Early this year I heard noises like a creaking floor in the dining room. Always the same area. Approximately 2 wks. prior to Easter I smelled an awful odor in the office . It got worse. Soon we noticed a piece of aluminum overhang in the front of the house hanging down. Next to a decorative apple tree. We put it back. Again it was down. We thought the wind did it. My grandson nailed it up next time. On May 18th we heard noices in the wall, like crying. We noticed our intercom was full of static also.  With painting work being done in the home, we did not think about it. The spotlight had come out of the ceiling, we thought it was loose.
WHEN THE THE RADIO WAS ON, WE WOOULD HEAR MORE NOISES.
THE ODOR WAS GETTING HORRIBLE.(RIGHT AROUND THE SPOTLIGHT AREA) WE CONTINUED TO SEE AND HEAR DIFFERENT THINGS, LIKE INSULATION COMING OUT OF A SMALL PIECE OF SIDING AT THE FRONT ENTRANCE. WE THOUGHT MAYBE SQUIRRELS. THE DAY BEFORE WE HAD TO GO ON A TRIP,JUNE 10TH, WE HEARD SCRATCHING IN A WALL. WE CALLED A GUY TO COME HE SET A TRAP IN THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HOUSE THAT HAS A LITTLE ATTIC. WE HAD TO LEAVE. THE TRAP WAS CHECKED, NOTHING. A WEEK LATER WE CAME HOME AT 10:30 PM I WALKED IN THE KITCHEN AND HEARD LABORED BREATHING AND CRYING. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED THE GUY. HE CAME 8 AM WE HAD A DEAD MOTHER RACCOON IN THE TRAP. FOUND A BABY IN THE HEATING VENT. NEXT MORNING , HEARD IT AGAIN. THE GUY CAME, PULLED ANOTHER BABY OUT OF THE PIPE TO THE HEATING SYSTEM. HE HAD TO TAKE PIPES APART TO GET AT IT. ABOUT 10 DAYS LATER, I HEARD SCURRYING AROUND, SCRATCHING ETC. IN THE LEFT SIDE OF THE HOUSE. NO ACCESS TO THE UPPER AREA.(an open arch seperates the left from right side of the house)
LAST WK. THURSDAY, WE HEARD CRYING IN THE SIDING AGAIN RIGHT SIDE OF HOUSE, NEAR THE FRONT ENTRANCE. WE TRIED TO PRY IT OPEN, WITH NO LUCK.  ON MONDAY MORNING, WE CAPTURED TWO SMALL RACCOONS CRAWLING ON THE SIDE OF THE FRONT ENTRANCE AND ANOTHER PIECE OF ALUMINUM OVERHANG DOWN.  WE THOUGHT WE WERE DONE. WELL THERE IS NOISE UP IN THE AREA WITH NO ATTIC. OVER OUR BEDROOM WITH A VAULTED CEILING. THE AREA WITH SOME ROOM IS A CLOSET AND TOILET AREA, THAT'S ALL, CONNECTED TO THE BEDROOM.. NO ACCESS.
WE HAVE OPENED MORE OVERHANG PANELS. I HEARD IT LAST NIGHT AGAIN, SO I KNOW IT'S STILL HERE.
WHAT DO THEY LIVE ON WHEN THEY CAN'T GET OUT? NO WATER OR FOOD.
HOW CAN I CLEAN UP IN THERE WHEN WE CAN'T GET AT IT? I CAN SMELL THEM FROM THE FAN AREA IN THE SHOWER AND TOILET ROOM. THE HORRIBLE SMELL IN THE OTHER ROOM WAS  URINE AND FECES  ALONG WITH A HONEY BEES NEST ALL SMASHED AND I GUESS EATEN BY THE RACCOONS. IT WAS GHASTLY. I AM A WRECK, CAN YOU HELP? HOW CAN WE RID OURSELVES OF THEM AND THEIR ODOR AND ANY HEALTH PROBLEMS THAT COULD POSSIBLY OCCUR FROM ALL OF THIS. WE ARE A RETIRED COUPLE WITH HEALTH ISSUES TO BEGIN WITH.
ANY INPUT WOULD SURE HELP.
THANK YOU, JANICE

Answer
There are a lot of problems in what you have just described. I know it doesn't help much now but hopefully these possible mistakes won't be committed again. I will list them.

1. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER secure a hole unless you are swear to God certain that nothing is using the hole.
2. If you hire a wildlife control operator, make sure he is qualified. I don't know whether this person you hired was or not. But you need to make sure. Learn how to tell by visiting http://icwdm.org/VendorsService/default.aspx

3. Whenever traps are set they must be checked every day, literally every day. There are no holidays with traps. If the trap can't be checked then it shouldn't set.

4. Instead of prying open something, have you tried cutting it open?
5. Deodorants can be sprayed through small holes drilled into areas.
Learn about deodorizing at http://icwdm.org There is also information there on how to control and prevent raccoon problems. Trust me. There is plenty of info. Get informed before making any rash decisions. But don't dally.

As for health problems with smell? Depends. Too many variables.

Sorry for this painful lesson. We try to get quality information out there but clearly I have to work harder getting higher on the search engines. It's tough when you don't have something to sell.
