QuestionHi,
found a bug in the bed. Doesn't look like a bed bug, but would like to know what it is.
Description:
brown, ribbed type body, almost like a centipede, but it has only six legs. It has at least 7 ribs that stretch and compress. Head is blunt, and almost looks like the body just got cut off at neck. Fuzzy ridge around entire body. Relatively flat body. 3mm long, 1mm wide at head, 2mm wide at 2mm from head, and back end tapers to point after that. That tapered end is lighter in color than rest of body. Underside of body is a lighter brown color.
it is on its back right now, and it is moving by compressing the length of its body and and then stretching out again.
The insect was found in central Alberta, Canada.
Do we have anything to worry about?
Thank you very much for your time.
Regards,
Damian
AnswerDamian,
If you post a picture I could confirm the id but your description sounds like a casemaking clothes moth larva. The larvae live inside a sack made of bits of fiber. See http://www.livingwithbugs.com/clothes_moth.html for a picture of larvae and adults. Larvae feed on animal-based fibers like wool and hair. See the page cited above for control information as well. Post a follow up (and a photo) if you think it is something else or have other questions.
