QuestionHi, I live in Richmond,VA. In the attic, there is blown in insulation...it is a cream color about 6"thick. I have noticed small holes (about the size of a quarter)and pathways coming from those holes where something has depressed the insulation. There are holes and pathways throughout the whole attic. I set 8 spring mouse traps and glue traps out baited with seeds, cheese and peanut butter. After a few days I checked the traps...nothing! None of the traps were sprung and no food was taken. I am thinking now along the lines of a shrew. Do you have any ideas on what these critters are? and what to do about them. I have never seen an animal in our attic. Thank you for your responses
AnswerMy first question is whether the holes are fresh or old? Insulation damage can last for years after the culprit is removed. Assuming it is fresh, I suggest a better inspection. Visit http://icwdm.org for a training course (yes its free) on how to properly inspect your home. Second, if it is shrews, place the snap traps perpendicular to the trail so they have to walk over the trigger. This is called a blind set. Details on shrews and their control are also at the site.
Since you haven't complained of hearing noise,s I would be cautious about assuming you have an active problem. More evidence is needed.
