QuestionHi Jack,
I'm hoping you will be able to help me.
Today, I inherited a potted plant from a neighbor whose roommate had left it behind after a move. It had been left outdoors for some time. It looks relatively healthy, if not a bit neglected. The soil was overly moist, so I decided to repot it, and while I was doing so, noticed that it hosted an impressive number of slobbery looking creatures: many slugs or slug looking things, and a few small millipedes. I washed the roots of the plant carefully with sink water and have repotted them in fresh soil in a fresh pot, but I'm wondering: have I really gotten rid of the pests? Could they be burrowing in the roots? The plant is a thin tropical plant, that looks like a very spindly Japanese Maple.
Thank you for your expertise! As a novice container gardener, I really appreciate it!!! :-)

AnswerMari,
I'm not sure exactly what you found but I doubt they were pests at all. I suspect these were just critters that crawled into the pot when it was outside. Re-potting was exactly the right thing to do in this case. If you see them again take a picture and I'll be able to give you a better idea about what they are.
