tiny insects

Question
I recently found a very small insect in my home that resembled a baby head lice, however i have found no other evidence of lice on myself or any of my roommates or anywhere else in the house.  Are there are any other insects that resemble head lice?

Answer
Sarah,

It would be very unusual to find a head louse (immature or adult) except on a head. They don't generally infest houses and won't survive very long away from a head. They need the warmth and moisture that the scalp skin provides to survive and well die quickly if removed. You've found something that resembles a louse. The most likely candidate would be a psocid or booklouse. Booklice are not related to head lice but look superficially like lice. Booklice feed on organic debris, fungi and paper, they can sometimes damage books. Generally no control is necessary unless you have rare books or other valuable paper around. You might want to google "booklice" for pictures.
