QuestionMy vegetable garden in No. Calif. is about 1/4 acre, surrounded by fruit trees, which in turn are surrounded by large live oaks. After having tried all else, I am considering electric fencing. How tall would such a fence need to be to prevent squirrels jumping into the garden from tree limbs? What are other important considerations? Thanks.
AnswerOkay, a little complicated on the answer because we have multiple issues.
1. Visit http://icwdm.org and read the prevention page on protecting gardens. YOu will need to put up a fence and then put a hot wire 6 inches from the top to prevent climb overs.
2. As for the trees, I trust you have already wrapped the trunks with aluminum flashing to prevent climbing. If not do so. Details on the site.
3. Trim back branches so the squirrels can't jump into the garden.
4. Check to see if electric fencing is legal in your area.
