green worms on oak trees massachusetts

Question
Hi Jack,

I have in infestation of small green worms that seem to be eating all the leaves on my oak trees. they are about 1/2 to 5/8 inch long and I've seen some hang from a web.  What are these worms and how can I get rid of them.

Answer
Jack,

This sounds like one of the oak loopers (moth caterpillars) that can defoliate oaks and other hardwoods. The bad news is there is not much you can do to stop the feeding but the good news is most of the time otherwise healthy trees recover and often look better after this "natural pruning". Give the trees a little extra water and fertilizer to help them through this stress.
