QuestionHello, I have a problem this year with my raspberry plants. New shoots start to wilt without any visual problem. Then I snaped some wilted shoots and found out small white warms inside steams. It looks like they burrow inside and eat the center of the steam leaving it black (inside) and hollow. Please, HELP. Svetlana.
AnswerSvetlana,
There are a number of insects that bore into raspberry canes, both flies and beetles. Fortunately none are severe pests and can usually be dealt with by pruning out the affected canes. Destroy pruned canes by burning or shedding. If your plants are otherwise healthy they will usually outgrow the problem. Take a look at this page http://www.extension.umn.edu/yardandgarden/ygbriefs/e216raspberry.html from the University of Minnesota about a variety of raspberry pests.
