how do bumblebees produce holes in wood?

These are not bumble bees they are called carpenter bees. They look very similar but their "back" is shiny unlike a bumble bee. Take a look at this page http://www.livingwithbugs.com/carpenter_bee.html for ways to avoid damage from carpenter bees.
